Lung Function testing, or Pulmonary function testing, is a group of tests that check the efficiency of your lungs. Specifically, they test:

  • Capacity for air

  • Ability of respiration

  • Ability to oxygenate the bloodstream

There are several types of lung tests, including:

  • Spirometry: speed and strength of respiration

  • Lung volume test: the lungs’ maximum air capacity, and the remaining air after exhalation

  • Gas diffusion test: the transfer of oxygen and other gases to the bloodstream

  • Exercise Stress test: the effects of exercise on lung function

How do I know if I need it?

You’ll need a lung function test if you have:

  • Breathing problems (shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing)

  • Chronic lung disease

  • Exposition to asbestos

  • Scleroderma

  • Sarcoidosis

  • A respiratory infection

  • An abnormal chest x-ray

  • A scheduled lung or abdominal surgery
