Nerve Conduction Velocity Test

Cognitive-impairment

Loss of memory is a common effect of aging. However, some people have memory problems due to a health condition called Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). It is a condition that includes issues associated with memory, judgment, language, and thinking. People suffering from MCI have increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The Procedure

Procedure for the nerve conduction velocity may vary depending on the patient’s condition. The test is performed with the help of technologist .

Patient will be asked to remove jewelry, eyeglasses, hairpins and all other metal objects that can hamper the procedure. Electrodes will be attached to the patient’s body over the nerve at different areas to finish the procedure.

Results

Generally, the normal range of conduction velocity is approximately 50-60 m/sec. However, results may vary depending on individual and the type of nerve tested. Irregular results may be due to nerve injury. Various health conditions can also be the cause behind slowdown of impulses.
